Job Description
Position Title:
Adult Services Librarian
Pay Grade: 7
Reports To: Library Director

Job Summary:
The Adult Services Librarian (ASL) plans, manages, and provides services and programs to adults and teens age 12-18. Duties include collection development, adult and teen programming, technical services and circulation. The ASL supervises the library and staff in the absence of the Library Director. The work performed is subject to review through observation, reports and the results achieved.

Job Duties:


Collection Management

Read book reviews and other information sources to identify materials to enrich the collection and correct deficiencies.
Select materials for the adult and teen collections within a budget.
Weed collection according to Library policy.
Organize and maintain collection in a neat and orderly manner.
Create thematic displays of materials.
Provide minor repair of damaged materials.

Programming and Outreach
Develop and supervise adult and teen programming, such as book groups and summer reading clubs.
Prepare press releases and/or advertising for adult and teen programming.
Promote library use through contact with the public, community organizations, and local schools.
Oversee community information displays.

Circulation and Patron Service
Provide reference and reader’s advisory service to all ages.
Assist patrons with use of all print and electronic library resources.
Offer computer and Internet assistance and/or instruction.
Assist patrons with copy and FAX machines.
Perform regular circulation desk duties, including issuing library cards, checking materials in and out, verifying patron status, and collecting payment of fines and fees.
Answer telephone and deal courteously with public.
Maintain patron confidentiality.
Shelve and shelf-read materials.

Technical Services
Assist with simple copy cataloging.
Assist with processing of library materials for circulation.

Administration
Supervise Library and staff in absence of Library Director.
Assist Library Director in developing annual budget.
Advise Library Director of supply needs.

Professional Education and Development
Participate in education and development in relevant areas of Library Science.
Join and participate in the New Hampshire Library Association and the READS section.
Keep current with changes in library systems and technology.

Other
Open and close library facility.
Attend monthly staff meetings.
Perform other Library duties as assigned by Library Director.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in related field. MLS or MLS candidate preferred.

Experience
Experience working reference, adult, and/or teen services in a public or school library.
Experience supervising others.
Experience in creating and implementing programs for adults and teens.
Experience with reference databases, such as Ebsco Host or ProQuest.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability
General knowledge of library procedures.
General knowledge of computers, Internet use and library software operation, including word-processing and spreadsheet software, e-mail, and Internet searching.
Ability to multi-task.
Ability to deal with the public effectively.

Physical Requirements
Able to bend, squat, and stretch as necessary.
Able to use a two-step foot stool.
Able to lift, push or carry items of moderate weight, (40 pounds), such as book carts, boxes, book bags, furnishings and equipment.
