Job Description

Position Title:
Assistant Librarian
Pay Grade: 4
Reports To: Adult Services Librarian

Job Summary:
The Assistant Librarian performs circulation desk duties, assists patrons with locating information and materials, provides readers’ advisory service, prepares collection materials for circulation, performs other clerical duties, and helps maintains a neat, organized collection. Performance is subject to review through observation, reports and the results achieved.

Job Duties:


Circulation and Patron Services

Perform regular circulation desk duties, including issuing library cards, checking materials in and out, verifying patron status, and collecting payment of fines and fees.
Assist customers with location of materials or simple reference questions and refer patrons to other appropriate assistance.
Provide readers’ advisory service.
Process Interlibrary Loan receivables and returns.
Manage materials on Hold/Reserve/ILL shelf.
Record daily statistics.
Monitor level of library supplies.
Place courtesy calls to patrons with overdue material.
Operate, maintain, and assist patrons with use of copy machine, FAX, Internet and computers.
Maintain patron confidentiality.
Answer telephone and deal courteously with public.
Shelve and shelf-read materials into proper sequence.

Technical Service
Process library materials for circulation.
Repair minor damage to materials.

Collection Management
Maintain periodical collection.
Assist with collection development and maintenance.
Assist with thematic displays.

Programming
Arrange library furniture and equipment for use in library programs and restore furniture and equipment to former locations following use.

Other
Open and close library facility.
Attend staff meetings.
Participate in education and development opportunities when appropriate.
Assist in other departments when needed.
Perform other library duties as assigned by supervisor.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education

High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

Experience
One year of library experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skill and Ability
General knowledge of library procedures.
General knowledge of computer and Internet use, including word-processing and spreadsheet software, e-mail, and Internet searching.
General knowledge of library automation software.
Ability to deal with public effectively.
Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
Able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Able to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
Skill in typing and filing.

Physical Requirements

Able to bend, squat, and stretch as necessary.
Able to lift, push or carry items of moderate weight, (40 pounds), such as bookcarts, boxes, book bags, furnishings and equipment.
Able to accommodate a two-step foot stool.
